As I swung unto the highway today, I grinned at the number of fancy cars that wheezed past me, their drivers sporting generic looks and the same determined grimace. Each car seemed to move effortlessly in the general direction of the downtown area where most of the businesses are located. The tires sang in sync, 'I owe, I owe, its off to work I go'. Rush hour! I recognize them (and the song) because I'm not only the President of the club, wait, I'm the CEO too and I blend in just right. Its amazing how quickly fads are developed, and fashions become forms. We celebrate the quirky, and it soon becomes the new 'norm'. Long ago, family came first but now, careers often leave other priorities in the dust. God reminded me today that those things which people deem right or natural are in fact not always the best. When we allow things to follow a natural progression, the outcome is not always guaranteed. If we work hard, build a strong network and increase our knowledge and skill base, we shall succeed. Right? Not always. You know that and I know that. (I hope I do). Guess what? You'll probably get a good job, move ahead and enjoy a measure of 'success' as defined by todays society - whatever that is. If you call success one hour commutes, $4 per gallon of gas, high mortgages and car payments, loads of under-utilized toys and gadgets and bickering families . Hint, hint, nudge, nudge. I know what 'am talking about! Well. How about allowing God to design the path you take? He formed you before you were in your mothers womb, (don't take my word for it, read Jeremiah 1:5) and He had a blueprint designed with your name on it (Jeremiah 29:11). The trail may meander, you may stumble often like a drunk and others may laugh, but God is patient, and if you will trust Him, He will open doors for you that all the education, connections and preparation in the world cannot achieve. You see, He knows your limitations (and I''ve got mine aplenty), but He cares for you in a way that neither family nor friend can. Forget co-workers, for the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light (Luke 16:8). So, what will it be? Will you work yourself into the grave, the divorce court or the nearest cardiology unit, or do you want to surrender to the God who gives and takes away, who lifts up the humble and provides for the needy? Your choice. I don't know about you, I daily choose God. Afterall, promotion comes from the Almighty (Psalm 75:6,7). He raised Joseph up from the pit to the palace (Genesis41:14-41) gave him fame and favor, reversed his family's fotunes, even that of his brothers who hated him ... and Joseph did not even have to go to Harvard. Check that out!

So true... what I just read. It is simply a rat race, and we need to always step back and not get carried away by demands of our daily lives. God has to always be first place in our lives. |
