MY DAILY COMMUTE... PDF Print E-mail

I have a long daily commute and though physically demanding, it is a blessing because it affords me the opportunity to fellowship with God and discover my own mind on pertinent issues.

The joy of being alone with God is a cultivated state. It has taken me several years of living as a believer to finally realize that my need for God is almost as important as His need for me. Sacrilege! No, you di'nt! I can just see you all rolling your eyes and sucking your lips, but yes, I did. God told me so Himself. He made us for fellowship and relationship, to 'walk in the garden with Him'. Genesis 3:8.

We spend a lot of time in prayer, but very little time in communion. The first few moments, I find myself just trying to quiet the 'ducks' in my head and center in on God's presence instead. (The ducks are those thoughts that keep running a commentary in our minds, preoccupying us and distracting us from rational thought. ) Then I struggle to get past the serious urge to spend the time presenting my shopping list.... 'bless me, Father, for I have sinned. While we're at it, please bless me and all my loved ones till we are the envy of all around us..' Usually its one variation or the other, but you get the picture.

Finally, about 20 minutes into the 'quiet time', I get around to thinking about God Himself, who has freely given us all things to enjoy. I start to marvel at His handiwork as I speed down the highway. (Uh, did I say that out loud?). Anyway, by now I am feeling magnanimous toward this loving, wonderful Creator. I want to know, what does He want? Imaginaire that! I am willing to go to the ends of the earth, I want to spread the good news to all and sundry, I am ready to spend time with Him in eternity. I'll do whatever he asks...... This ushers me into a place of serenity and blissful rest in my soul, as God responds to my generous offer. He is complete, All in all, nothing lacking and nothing missing. In fact, I can walk away confident that my shopping list is already filed away under His loving care. God has my back.

By now, I'm pulling into my driveway with a goofy grin on my face. I just had communion with the King. I'm full and sated. I have sought His face, and the effect of righteousness is peace!
